Tommy Oneal CTTC, USN (Ret) Athens TN 37303 01/22/05 NAVCOMSTA Sidy Yahia, Apr 64 to May 66 --- My first 6 months were spent in the EM Club and work. I married and my wife joined me in Sept 64 so we set up home in Kenitra on Rue Richard Rita. We really enjoyed our tour there. I want to say that throughout my tour in the Navy I always felt safer with knowing that I had Marines outside keeping the bad guys at bay. ... Thanks. Tom Oneal
rfsmiley US 01/17/05 I was stationed at the Air Station in Kenitra in 1966-1967. At first I was with base security and after having my rate changed was attached to the crash crew at the air operations dept. Enjoyed the time I spent in morocco.
Jerry Zimmerman West Allis, WI 01/05/05 After I graduated from the Pensacola Naval School of Photography as an Aerial Photographer I was placed in charge of the Port Lyautey Naval Air Station?s Fleet Photo Lab from June 1946 to April 1948. One of my favorite memories was accompanying the Base's Captain as his official photographer to an invited celebration of the Sultan of Morocco. Another is when I photographed the Jan. 1948 official ceremony of the USA?s return of the Naval Air Base to the French. Up to that time the USN personal had lived in the three white buildings "on the hill" above the airfield. As soon as the Base was returned to the French we were moved to Quonset huts behind the landmark water tower and the shed of generators that provided electrical power for the Base. After 58 years I remain in contact with one special friend, ?Mac? McClintic, who was in charge of the parachute-packing loft across from my Photo Lab. I LOVED my time in Morocco, in particular my opportunity to visit wonderful cities such as Rabat and Casablanca. In 1984 I enjoyed visiting with some of ?today's youth? of Kinetra at Disney World?s Epcot Center. What pleasant, wonderful ambassadors they were of "their" country. I felt as if I was back in Morocco one more time!

def@wtez.net US 07/02/04 I stopped at the PLNAS for a couple of weeks, enroute to USS Newport News (CA-148) laying off Lebanon in the fall of 1959. NAS Port Lyautey had the best Navy exchange I have ever visited. I was not there long......(few days, as I recall). Good chow and beautiful setting in a beautiful contry. Too bad the base is now gone. I recall that the USN was changing out aircraft onboard the 6th fleet carriers. The replacement aircraft came through PLNAS...F8 Crusaders. Maybe I''''''''''''''''ll visit there again one day.....riding my BMW GS....

Will MA 06/12/04 Sorry to barge in, but I was born in Port Lyautey on November 3, 1970 to two Irish Protestant US citizens from Texas (he was stationed there--she was not). They got married in Oct 1970 in Kenitra. I don't know their names, as I was later adopted in the US. I am searching for their names. It can't be that hard--how many Irish US citizens from Texas got married in Kenitra in Oct 1970 and gave birth to a boy in the military hospital at 5:01 am on November 3? If you have any info--if you remember ANYTHING please e-mail me at willwilde@yahoo.com. Again, sorry to barge in to your great website, but you guys seem to be my only hope left. Please help me find my parents! Will

As a native of CasablancaMorocco,I worked as an LWR. in the finance office and Civilian Personnel in Nouaceur AF Base. and in 1959 I emigrated to the USA where I joined the US Army and spent 20 years in it until I retired in 1980. I also served a tour of duty in Norfolk , VA (!972) supporting the staff war college and enjoyed every single minute being part of the Navy as an Army soldier!!I just want hoh much I've appreciated all these pitures on this site I just discovered today!!! Too bad we had to close that Navy Base in Kenitra!! While retired I spent couple years in rota, Spain where I met lots of Navy retirees. Thanks for the memories!!!!
Tom Weakland Lake Orion, MI 05/17/04 Born and raise in New Kensington, Pa, near Pittsburgh. Stationed in Lyautey 52/53. I was a Communication tech (CT3). Enjoyed every minute there. Visited a dozen towns and cities plus to trips to Europe. Any CT's out there?? Thanks Tom
Gary Mikel Ohio 10/28/03 I was stationed in Morocco from june 23, 1964 to june 25, 1965. My rank at that time was ENFN (US NAVY). My duties were standing 8 hour watches in the power plant listening to the deafening deisel engines pound away! I also helped build a couple of the GMC 678's. These deisel engines were used as generators for power for our base and for power for the comunications building. I did not do any traveling as it was for the most part not permitted. I spent a lot of time in at the "Fleet Club" in Kenitra. There was a singer that performed there and her name was Sandy. I remember one of the sidewalk vendors (and I have pictures of him)that everybody called "Jesse James" I still have a wool beach blanket that I bought from him for $2.00! I also still have a Fez hat and a couple other items I brought back with me.Ironically at this time I am trying to get years of photographs organized, and of course photos from Morocco are amoung them. These photos brought back both good and bad memories. One bad memory was of a Marine who only had days left before being discharged. He had been doing something he shouldn't have been doing and the local police chased him. Trying to get away, he decided to jump over a concret wall where there were high power transformers. They found him the next day. He had touched down on top of these transformers and was electrocuted instantly. He came back on the same plane as I. I can still remember seeing his coffin off to one side of the plane. What a waste. He was a good Man and Marine. I do have good memories also. There are too many to mention. I do wish I could get in contact with one good friend I had there. But have had no luck. In closing, I was surprised to find this site and would like to hear from anybody that was stationed there at the same time. Take care to All

Kathy Egan Phoenix, AZ 09/08/03 My step-father landed at Fadela (now Mohameddia) during the war, where fighting broke out with the Germans. We visited a few years ago, but there was really only one house that possibly survived from that time - Mohammedia has grown so much. He is not Internet-active but certainly has talked of that time.
John Bryan, IMC, USN, Ret. Wrens, GA 07/07/03 My first memory was when I was informed that I would be stationed in Sidi Yahia in Dec. of 1968. I envisioned desserts but was pleasantly surprised by the beauty of the country. I was stationed in Sidi Yahia in the supply dept. for 2 years. I remember volunteering to stand watch for the marines so they could attend their birthday ball. I loved the country so much, I returned in 1975 to Kenitra and was there until 1978 and left just before the base was closed. I was on the radio with the 'Old Man of the Sea' and our American Graffiti show. I would love to visit again and hope to do so in the next few years.
George M. Sutherland Ashland MA, USA 07/02/03 Arrived what was then Port Lyauty in Sept. 1953 until Oct.1954. I was an AG3 at the Fleet Weather Central. While there I visited Rabat,Casablanca, and Fez as well as a 30 day leave in Europe. I found the native Moroccan people to be warm and friendly. Of course I had a number of experiences while there, all good. One does stand out that took place out on the beach near the outlet of the Sabou River. A buddy was playing with a dog in the surf but got caught in the riptide. I went to help him as he could not swim. the next thing we knew we were a couple of hundred yards off shore, so we did the only sensible thing and shouted for help. Navy and local lifeguards came to our rescue, I was able to swim in once they reached us, and they took my buddy in. Luckily everyone was OK. ok i I

corliss miller nystrom Issaquah, WA 06/19/03 I moved to Pt. Lyautey as a little girl with my family arriving July 3, 1953 and departing July 28, 1955. My dad was a dentist and helped build the medical clinci. At first we lived in the quonset huts, then moved to new quarters by the hospital. I loved the web site, and remember so much....drumming and dancing with the fatimas, the cork forest, the beach, the outdoor theatre. I went to 3 and 4th grade at the school by the big water tower. My parents became good friends with Madam Kitty who owned a wonderful French restaurant/club called La Feniere's in town. I hope to visit Morocco again in 2005. I loved the pictures and could recognize some places. Thank you so much!
Steve Elswick Lexington, KY 03/13/03 Arrived in Morocco as a young Marine in 1972. Did a 15 month tour of duty. Without a doubt a highlight in my 4 year enlistment. Stationed at Sidi Yahia, 1st Guard Company. I painted the sign in the shape of Morocco that stood in front of the Company HQ's. Fond memories of the antenna field, nights in Kenitra, traveling to remote locations on weekend permission, The American Bar, The Navy bus into Kenitra, many friends, miss you all. After the Marines I did a stint in Rhodesia with the R.L.I., now make my living as a fine artist and run a delivery service. Great site, would like to hear from any of my old mates or those Moroccans that remember some of the crazy times from 72-73.
Jake USA 03/08/03 Hi Jalil Just checked out your web site and want to thank you for the kind words you have spoken about those who served in Morocco. I served at Port Lyautey from '54 to '56 was a great education for a young man of 17 and just out of high school. It was some of the best duty during my Navy tour and would like some day to be able to pay a return visit there. Found the people of that country very friendly towards Americans in those days and their way of life was very interesting to say the least, for this man who up to that point in his life had never been out of the USA. Only problems I remember in those days were directed toward the French, not the Americans who served there. Don't remember any of us not blaming the Moroccan people for wanting their freedom from the French, after all didn't the Yanks fight for their's from the British. My memories of Morocco were all good ones and if I could turn back the pages of time, i would serve there again in a minute. Please keep up he good work on your web site and have book marked it, so i can pay your site a return visit from time to time, to see how you progress with it. Rabbi Jem Golden USA 02/15/03 Hello Jalil, or should I say "Labess." It has been many years, but I think that was the greeting. I was stationed in Morocco from March 14, 1966, through June 8, 1967. I was very impressed with the entire Moroccan culture. It was truly one of the best times in my military career. In fact, I still correspond with several people from my old unit. We have a web site on Classmates. I travled quite abit while I was in Morocco, and loved every place I visited. I only wish I could get back there sometime, see old friends and places again. If there is any thing I can do to help you with your site, let me know, as I am very interested. Take care and God Bless.

Chuck Huber St. Augustine FL 02/04/03 The sun had just set as I arrived to the coast of North Africa enroute from Lajes, Azores in a US Navy aircraft. The sparkling lights of Casablanca glistened like a diamond tiara. Maybe blase now, but to an Iowa boy who had never seen a building more than two stories high, arriving in Morocco in 1955 was fantastic. I was an Aviation Electronics Technician Second Class Petty Officer (AT2) with US Navy Heavy Attack Composite Squadron Eight (VC-8), flying the P2V-3C Neptunes and AJ-1/2 Savages, the first carrier launched atomic bombers during that Cold War period. We were based at Port Lyautey (Kenitra since independence in 1956) and it was French Morocco in 1955. Many great memories of many fine people. I still am in email contact with the son of a Moroccan who worked many years on the Naval Air Facility. My father, E.M. "Steve" Huber had also served with the US Navy in Morocco in 1944. For other memories of the US Navy presence during the early 1950s please visit my website at http://community.webtv.net/USNComposite
