Said Tlemcani
[12-DEC-04] My name is Said Tlemcani. I am currently residing in Atlanta in the state of Georgia. I am presently working on a Master’s degree in International Political Economy. A few years ago, I obtained my B.A. in International Relations with high honors from San Francisco State University. I also obtained an A.A. degree in Liberal Studies with high honors from College of San Mateo in the state of California. Furthermore, I received my A.A. in English Literature from Ben Abdelah University of Fes in Morocco.

I am currently working for a company called Associated Computer Services (ACS) as an Account Manager. This company has about 50,000 employees world-wide. Our departments work directly with GDCH (Georgia Department of Community Health). Our primary function is to be the fiscal agent for the state in our maintenance of a wholesome state health-care system from which millions of Georgians are benefiting. ACS is an icon which solidly stands for BPO (Business Process Outsourcing) for the government and the private sectors alike.

A few months ago and for about three years, I worked for British Telecommunications and Intel Corporation as a telecom. analyst and administrator. My duties revolved around serving the more than 80,000 Intel employees have trouble-free telecommunications no matter where they were on the planet. I and the rest of my team had to work with all types of engineers to debug the phone lines and the computer systems in order for Intel to meet its project dead-lines and cater to the needs of millions of its customers, be it the giant corporations or small individual consumer. Developing the Pentium chips were the hall mark of this unique company. Witnessing how Intel Corp. was technologically revolutionizing the world at large was a privilege in and of itself.

Given my International Relations background, I also worked for Amnesty International (A.I) of San Francisco as a research associate. My experience at A.I. opened up my eyes to many things I had never been aware of. As a research associate, I had to document human-rights abuses of many Third World countries in support of those who were imprisoned upon their arrival to the United States of America. These were arrested because they alleged having been put under persecution back in their native lands. Their freedom and their eventual achievement of a political asylum rested in my hands and those of my colleagues’. Our work at A.I. saved thousands of refugees from being repatriated and meeting a bleak and dark future, one of torture and death. My work at Amnesty International was worth every minute of it. Trying to sort out through all the paper work what was needed to be done only added to my belief that being in America was truly a privilege and an honor of immense proportions.

I also worked for Dr. Dwight James Simpson as a teaching assistant in our Department of International Relations for about two years. It was in San Francisco State University where I was greatly inspired by Professor Simpson. He was a man of great character and a unique personality. I had the privilege of working for him as I led his classes in preparing for exams, inviting international diplomats to offer presentations on world affairs, and bridging cultural, religious, and dogmatic differences which occasionally arose between the students vis-à-vis their outlook toward world events especially in our area of study: the Middle East. Those differences were merely a testimony of the colorfulness of the world. Tackling issues from different perspectives was one way for me to profoundly and increasingly understand the world and its peoples.
